• Gather your supplies first: all-purpose cleaner, degreaser, glass cleaner, bathroom cleaner, a scrub brush, microfiber cloths, a vacuum, a mop, and a step stool.
• Work top to bottom in every room — dust and debris fall, so clean ceiling fans and shelves before counters and floors.
• Take timestamped before-and-after photos of every room, including inside appliances, cabinets, and closets. This is your best evidence if a landlord ever disputes your deposit return.
• Re-read your lease for specific move-out cleaning requirements, like professional carpet cleaning or a cleaning receipt.

Kitchen

The kitchen gets the closest inspection of any room, because grease and food residue are the easiest things for a landlord to spot.

• Oven: pull out and scrub the racks, wipe down the interior, clean the glass door, and degrease the exterior and knobs.
• Refrigerator: empty completely, wipe down shelves, drawers, and door seals, and clean underneath and behind if it rolls out.
• Microwave: wipe the interior and exterior, and remove and wash the turntable and its ring.
• Cabinets and drawers: empty every one, wipe inside and out, and don’t skip the tops of cabinets, where grease-dusted grime collects.
• Sink and faucet: scrub the basin, polish the faucet, and remove any mineral buildup around the base.
• Countertops and backsplash: wipe down and degrease, paying extra attention behind the stove.

Bathrooms

• Baseboards: wipe all the way around every room — corners collect the most dust.
• Blinds: dust each slat individually and spot-clean any marks.
• Ceiling fans: wipe the blades on top and underneath.
• Closets: empty completely and wipe down shelves, rods, and floors.
• Walls: spot-clean scuffs and fingerprints, especially near light switches, doorframes, and furniture corners.
• Windows: clean the glass inside, and wipe down the sills and tracks.

Floors & Whole-Home Details

Finish with a full pass over the entire home so nothing gets missed on the walkthrough.

• Vacuum every carpet and rug thoroughly, including edges, corners, and closet floors.
• Consider a professional carpet cleaning if your lease requires it or the carpet shows heavy wear — many landlords ask for a receipt.
• Mop all hard-surface flooring.
• Light fixtures: dust and wipe globes and shades, and replace any burnt-out bulbs.
• Switch plates and outlet covers: wipe down — they collect more handprints than almost anything else in the house.
• Doors and doorknobs: wipe down, including the tops of doors, which collect a surprising amount of dust.

Phoenix-Specific Tips

• Hard water: address faucets, showerheads, and sinks with a vinegar or descaling solution — mineral buildup is one of the most common deductions we see on Phoenix move-out inspections.
• Fine desert dust: it resettles fast on blinds, ceiling fans, and window tracks, even right after you clean — do one final dust pass just before your walkthrough.
